Call for papers for the international conference for young scholars

Representing the Past in Architecture

We are seeking contributions for an interdisciplinary conference, titled “Representing the Past in Architecture”, which will be held in Vilnius, on October 8-11, 2012. The conference is organised by the Herder-Institut (Marburg), the Lithuanian Institute of History (Vilnius) and the Nordost-Institut (IKGN e.V., Lüneburg).

Short Description of the Theme of the Conference:
In 2001 Lithuanian government decided to begin rebuilding the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius, which was completely destroyed at the end of the 18^th century. Among many things this (re-)construction indicated a search for the new/old history, for the country’s self-assertion, for the state’s representation, as well as manifested one of the ways in promoting new post-Soviet Lithuanian national identity. This example, however, was not unique: one can recall the rebuilding of the Royal Castle in Warsaw in the 1970s, or recent discussions about the restoration of the Stadtschloss in Berlin.

However, some scholars tend to argue that such resurrection of historical structures in contemporary time is more than a mere act of representation. As French philosopher Jean Baudrillard has pointed out, such objects become simulacra which not just represent, but rather simulate or imitate certain aspects of the past, and at the same time are imbued with particular contemporary meanings and connotations. Therefore, among the questions that we would like to discuss during the event are: What impact do the rebuilt structures have on the historical perception and formation of identities? How do they represent or simulate the past? What old and new connotations can be identified in the object(s)? Why were these particular structures chosen to be rebuilt? Therefore one of the main aims of the conference is to discuss such examples of (re-)constructed histories, which are expressed not only in different architectural forms, but also monuments, city planning, parks, squares, etc.

Under such general guidelines the organisers of the upcoming interdisciplinary conference cordially invite young scholars (up to the age of 35) to present and discuss their cases. Framework for the discussions will also be guided by presentations given by several keynote speakers. Even though our primary focus is on Central, Eastern and Northern Europe, yet other relevant proposals pertaining to the topic will be considered too. Travel (only within Europe) and accommodation costs will be covered by the organisers. The language of the proceedings is English.

Human Migration and Social Integration in 19th and 20th Century European Societies

International and Interdisciplinary Summer School of the Herder Institute, Marburg, August 19-25, 2012

Human migration – caused by war, but also by economic hardships and political decisions – has molded the social, economic and political development of numerous (East-Central) European states, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. Key examples include the migration of Jews following the pogroms in the late 19th century Russian Empire, the migration of labourers from East Prussia to the Ruhr district, and the population transfers, flights or rather expulsions which were the consequence of both World War I and, particularly, World War II. These migrations, which mostly took place in several waves, influenced not only the identity of the immigrants, but also – to varying degrees – that of the societies which absorbed them, and which had to come to terms with them and the collective memory of their communities.

The summer academy of the Herder Institute aims at a critical analysis of current paradigms in migration research. It will focus on the causes of migration, on the role and impact of national, confessional and linguistic experiences of human migration, and on the attempts made at social integration, both for individuals and for the societies as a whole.

We invite any projects which carry out a theoretical or methodical approach to historical migration research or research on migration and integration (and related issues), as well as e.g. regional, local or biographical micro- and case-studies. The placing of focus on specific regions, topics or time-periods was intentionally left open for the particular projects, but in general the summer school will focus on various human migrations in East-Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore, we are looking forward to receiving contributions on East-Central Europe as well as on other European areas, or even on regions beyond Europe, as well contributions focusing on to earlier eras. This will allow for diverse and comparative discussions on different epochs and regions.

The summer school adopts an interdisciplinary approach, but its main emphasis will be on cultural studies and history. It will include coursework on theoretical and empirical texts (a reader will be provided approximately four weeks before the summer academy starts) as well as the presentation of the participants‘ projects. In addition, renowned and recognised scholars will provide a reflection on the state of current research and on different paradigms in a number of keynote speeches.

We can provide a total of up to 20 places for qualified junior scholars (especially PhD students), from Germany as well as from abroad. Half of the vacancies will be assigned to persons from abroad. Travel and accommodation expenses, as well as a part of the food and refreshments, will be provided by the Herder Institute. We ask those participants coming from outside of Europe for their understanding that we might only be able to cover a portion of their travel expenses.

Presentations can be given in German or English, however participants should be able to comprehend both languages. A reader will be provided for all participants prior to the beginning of the summer academy. It is expected that all attendees will actively participate in the whole summer school [Arrival on 19.08.2012, start of the summer school on 20.08.2012 (9 o‘clock), Departure on 25.08.2012 (in the afternoon)].

The summer school will be chaired by:
Prof. Dr. Christian Kleinschmidt (University of Marburg) studied history, social science and philosophy in Bochum (first state examination 1988); received the doctor‘s degree and the post-doctural lecturer qualification at the University of Bochum in 2000; assistant professor at the WHU in Vallendar, interim professor in Münster, Mainz and Dortmund; 2007-2009 professor of modern history with an emphasis on contemporary history at the University of Paderborn; since 2009 professor for modern history with an emphasis on economic and social history at the University of Marburg. Current projects: Economic Relations between Germany and Turkey from 1945 to 1980. Focus of research: Economic and business history; history of marketing and consumption.

Dr. Heidi Hein-Kircher (Herder Institute): studied East-Central European and modern history, political science and Yiddish from 1989 to 1994 and conducted her doctorate from 1995 to 2000 at the University of Düsseldorf; from 2003 research fellow at the Herder Institute Marburg, since 2009 in charge of the ‘Wissenschaftsforum’ [‘Scientific Forum’]. Current project: Municipal Administration and National Movement in a Multi-Ethnic City: Lemberg in the 19th Century; a central focus of her research is on the question of minorities in East-Central Europe.

Migration und Integration in europäischen Gesellschaften
des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts

Internationale und interdisziplinäre Sommerakademie des Herder-Instituts, Marburg, 19.-25. August 2012

Migrationen – ausgelöst durch Kriege, aber auch durch wirtschaftliche Not und politische Entscheidungen – prägten tief die gesellschaftliche, ökonomische und politische Entwicklung zahlreicher (ostmittel-)europäischer Staaten insbesondere im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Beispielhaft wären die Migration von Juden nach den Pogromen im Russländischen Reich im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert, die Arbeitsmigrationen aus Ostpreußen ins Ruhrgebiet, die in Folge des Ersten und vor allem des Zweiten Weltkriegs ausgelösten Umsiedlungen, Flucht bzw. Vertreibung zu nennen. Die meist wellenartig stattfindenden Migrationen beeinflussten nicht nur die Identität der Migranten, sondern – in unterschiedlichem Maße – auch die aufnehmenden Gesellschaften, die sich mit den Migranten auseinandersetzen mussten, und ebenso das kollektive Gedächtnis ihrer sozialen Großgruppe.

Die Sommerakademie des Herder-Instituts setzt sich zum Ziel, die aktuellen Forschungsparadigmen zur Migrationsforschung zu hinterfragen. Im Zentrum der Überlegungen stehen sowohl Fragen nach Auslösern von Migrationen, nach der Rolle und Bedeutung der nationalen, konfessionellen, sprachlichen Erfahrung von Migration und Integration (oder Versuche von Integration) für Individuen und Gesellschaften gleichermaßen.

Wir laden Projekte ein, die eine theoretische oder methodische Annäherung an die historische Migrationsforschung leisten und Migrationen und in deren Folge Integration(sproblematiken) erforschen, wie auch Mikro- und Fallstudien beispielsweise regionaler, lokaler oder biografischer Art. Die konkrete räumliche, thematische sowie zeitliche Schwerpunktsetzung der einzelnen Projekte wird bewusst offen gelassen, wobei jedoch der Fokus der Sommerakademie insgesamt auf die verschiedenen Migrationen Ostmitteleuropas im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gelegt wird. Willkommen sind daher Beiträge sowohl zu den ostmitteleuropäischen als auch zu anderen europäischen wie auch außereuropäischen Regionen sowie zu früheren Epochen, so dass wir eine epochal und regional ausdifferenzierte und zugleich vergleichende Diskussion führen können.

Die Sommerakademie ist interdisziplinär ausgerichtet, hat aber einen Schwerpunkt in den Kultur- und Geschichtswissenschaften. Die Sommerakademie wird Kursarbeit an theoretischen wie auch empirischen Texten (ein Reader wird ca. 4 Wochen vor Beginn der Sommerakademie verschickt) sowie die Vorstellung eigener Projekte der Teilnehmenden beinhalten. Ergänzend werden renommierte und einschlägig ausgewiesene Wissenschaftler/innen den Stand der Forschung sowie verschiedene Forschungsansätze vertiefend durch längere Impulsvorträge reflektieren.

Es stehen insgesamt bis zu 20 Plätze für qualifizierte Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftler (vor allem Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden) aus dem In- und Ausland zur Verfügung, wobei etwa die Hälfte der Plätze an Personen aus dem Ausland vergeben wird. Die Reise- und Übernachtungskosten sowie ein Teil der Verpflegung werden vom Herder-Institut übernommen. Sollten Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer von außerhalb Europas anreisen, bitten wir um Verständnis, dass eventuell nur ein Teil der Reisekosten übernommen werden kann.

Vorträge können in Deutsch oder Englisch gehalten, beide Sprachen sollten verstanden werden. Vor Beginn der Sommerakademie wird allen Teilnehmern zur Vorbereitung ein Reader zugänglich gemacht. Es wird erwartet, dass die Teilnehmer an der gesamten Sommerakademie aktiv teilnehmen [Anreise am 19.8.2012, Tagungsbeginn am 20.8.2012 (9 Uhr), Abreise am 25.8.2012 (nachmittags)].

Seit einigen Jahren erfährt der gesamte Kontext der sogenannten Populärkultur, zeitgenössisch immer verbunden mit allen Aspekten der Mediengesellschaft, erneute Aufmerksamkeit. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen sowie den medialen Praktiken und Kulturtechniken der Populärkultur ist inzwischen in einer Weise als legitim und produktiv anerkannt, die mit Blick auf den klassischen Habitus der Humanwissenschaften bemerkenswert ist. Weder steht die Populärkultur in dieser Perspektive unter dem Verdacht, bloßes Instrument der „Kulturindustrie“ (Adorno/Horkheimer) zu sein, noch ist sie schlicht Agent einer „Gesellschaft des Spektakels“ (Debord) oder bloßer Transmitter einer entfremdeten „Warenästhetik“ (Haug). Ohne diese Positionen völlig aufzugeben, hat sich vielmehr eine neue Perspektive auf die Objekte und Praxen zeitgenössischer Kultur durchgesetzt, die von ihrem distinktiven Charakter als Akteur innerhalb des kulturellen Feldes ausgeht.
    Voraussetzung für diese neuerliche Entwicklung ist zweierlei. Zum einen ist es erforderlich, den Produkten der Massen- und Populärkultur einen epistemologischen Kern, eine epistemische Kompetenz zuzubilligen. Hierzu haben insbesondere die (britischen) Cultural Studies sowie die poststrukturalistische Kulturanalyse beigetragen. Zum anderen ist ein Begriff von Populärkultur erforderlich, der diese nicht mehr – wie noch in der klassischen Debatte – in eine strikte Opposition zur ‚Hochkultur‘ stellt und dabei homogenisiert, sondern der differenziert die unterschiedlichen reflexiven und performativen Potentiale massenhaft ‚erfolgreicher‘ Medienprodukte (einschließlich ihrer Komplexitätsdifferenzen) zu erfassen in der Lage ist. Notwendig ist schließlich eine Modellierung der epistemischen Mittel (z.B. Serialität) einerseits und Limitierungen andererseits, die der Kulturdiagnostik populärer Medien gesetzt sind.
    Für den hier projektierten Workshop fällt die Wahl mit der TV-Serie The Wire (USA 2002-2008) auf ein exemplarisches Material, das an der Schnittstelle zwischen sogenanntem Mainstream und Nobilitierungssegment verortet werden kann. Die Serie diskutiert am Beispiel Baltimores soziale und kulturelle Verschiebungen in der Struktur gegenwärtiger urbaner Räume: eine ‚neue‘ gesellschaftliche (hier v.a. ethnische) Segregation des Städtischen, die Entvölkerung der Innenstädte, den wechselseitigen Anstieg von Kriminalität und Versicherheitlichung bzw. Überwachung, die Etablierung neuer kultureller Rollen an den Schnittstellen von Stadtraum, Einkommen, Geschlecht und Ethnie, die Möglichkeiten politischer und polizeilicher Steuerung etc. Die Serie interagiert – worauf eine schnell einsetzende akademische Rezeption hingewiesen hat – mit urban geography, surveillance studies und der kulturwissenschaftlichen Identitäts-/Alteritätsforschung, indem sie deren aktuelle Erkenntnisse einerseits bestätigt, andererseits ihnen einen spezifischen epistemischen Mehrwert hinzuzufügen scheint.
    Allerdings gilt die Serie nicht nur als eines der weitsichtigsten Produkte der amerikanischen Serienkultur, wurde es nicht nur für seine innovative Ästhetik und komplexe Erzählstruktur gepriesen und mit dem Werk Balzacs verglichen. Zugleich richtet sich The Wire explizit und im Gegensatz etwa zum klassischen Autorenfilm an ein breites Publikum und operiert mit gängigen massenkulturellen Verfahrensweisen (so arbeitet die Serie mit den gängigen Klischees bewährter Figurenkonstellationen und Charaktere sowie mit geläufigen Genre-Elementen aus Melodrama, Action und Crime Fiction). Insofern könnte The Wire ein hervorragendes Beispiel dafür darstellen, wie innerhalb des populärkulturellen Mainstreams komplexe und analytische Narrative entfaltet werden, die in keiner Weise dem hegemonialen Kontext ihrer Entstehung gegenüber affirmativ sein müssen. Fraglich wird, ob Gegenständen wie The Wire ein Zugang über eine Kategorie der Subversion noch angebracht ist. Sinnvoller wäre wohl, nach einer der „affirmativen Kultur“ (Marcuse) selbst innewohnenden, reflexiven und somit diese auch transzendierenden Kraft zu fragen. Die Affirmation der Kultur wäre demnach immer schon mit einem Riss versehen, der den Blick auf verdeckte Diskurse und Realitäten freilegt. Anhand von The Wire kann exemplarisch ermittelt werden, inwieweit insbesondere Populärkultur über eine Kompetenz zur Analyse komplexer zeitgenössischer gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Zusammenhänge verfügt und welche Verfahren ihr dabei zur Verfügung stehen.
    Beachtenswert ist schließlich, dass die Serie trotz ihrer Thematisierung spezifisch amerikanischer Urbanität gerade nicht nur mit Blick auf die amerikanischen Gesellschaften der Gegenwart aussagekräftig ist. So werden Ästhetik, Fiktion, Dokumentation, Dramaturgie und Kritik in The Wire zu einem Bild der urbanen, neoliberalen bis postdemokratischen Realität der Gegenwart verwoben, dessen Signifikanz und Relevanz (der Globalisierung der Medien angemessen) auf „postmoderne Geographien“ (Edward Soja) weltweit ausstrahlt. Das doku-fiktionale Baltimore der Serie – mit seinem Drogenhandel, seiner polizeilichen und para-staatlichen Gewalt, seiner Armut, seiner politischen Ausweglosigkeit – bildet de facto eine globalisierte Krisenrealität moderner Gesellschaften ab. Der Workshop fragt in dieser Perspektive nach dem diagnostischen Potential der (zeitgenössischen) Populärkultur allgemein und nach den spezifischen Kompetenzen einer Serie wie The Wire im Besonderen.

Interdisziplinäre Graduiertentagung am Zentrum für Erzählforschung (ZEF) und Zentrum für Graduierten-studien (ZGS) der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal

Erzählungen erzählen nicht nur Geschichten, sondern erzählen Welten. Diese fiktionalen Welten können der tatsächlichen, textexternen Welt nahezu entsprechen, jedoch auch völlig andersgeartet, den gewohnten Ge-setzmäßigkeiten enthoben sein. Sie besitzen sowohl statische als auch dynamische Elemente, zu denen im Wesentlichen Raumzeitkontinua sowie Ereignisse und Figuren zählen.
Während ältere formalistisch-strukturalistische Ansätze eher die erzählerische Vermittlung (Stanzel) und Plotmodelle (Propp) aus formaler, textimmanenter Sicht zum Gegenstand machten, akzentuieren in Anleh-nung an Prämissen der analytischen Philosophie (Kripke, Lewis) die neueren erzähltheoretischen Possible Worlds-Ansätze die semantische Dimension von Erzählungen und die ontologische Beschaffenheit erzählter Welten (Dole�el, Pavel, Ronen, Ryan). In Folge der linguistic und cognitive turns richtete sich das narratologische Interesse verstärkt auf den Rezeptionsakt, durch den der Leser die inhärente Welt eines Textes mental evo-ziert und dadurch den Text überhaupt erst versteht (Gavins, Herman, Johnson-Laird, Semino, Werth). Kog-nitiv-phänomenologische Ansätze betonen das Eintauchen (immersion) in fiktionale Welten, so dass der Leser die Welt regelrecht ›erleben‹ kann. Neben expliziten Informationen des Textes sind logisch-analytische Schlussfolgerungen, pragmatische Implikationen des Diskurses und literarische Konventionen in Rechnung zu stellen: Bereits eine paratextuelle Gattungsbezeichnung (z.B. Märchen, Fabel, Science-Fiction) kann Basis-elemente wie Figuren, Räume etc. assoziativ aufrufen, die für die Weltkonstruktion des jeweiligen Genretextes benötigt werden; entsprechend müssen bei einer umfassenden Analyse erzählter Welten auch pragmatische, kontextuelle, gattungsspezifische und historische Aspekte Berücksichtigung finden. All diesen Konzepten liegt gewissermaßen die Vorstellung zugrunde, dass es bestimmte identifizierbare Textbausteine gibt, die für die mentale Konstruktion narrativer Welten verantwortlich sind.
In den vergangenen Jahren ist die in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren lebhaft geführte Auseinandersetzung mit ›fiktionalen‹ und ›möglichen‹ Welten innerhalb der englischsprachigen Narratologie zurückgegangen – in der germanistischen Erzählforschung war sie stets ein Desiderat. Ziel der Tagung ist es, eine kritische Bestands-aufnahme der bestehenden Welt-Konzepte zu leisten und das Potential dieser Paradigmen im Hinblick auf ihre Anschlussfähigkeit an neuere narratologische Orientierungen (kognitive, kontextuelle, transmediale oder kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze) zu erproben und zu diskutieren. Denn gerade die gegenwärtig zu konstatie-rende Pluralität und Heterogenität erzählter Welten in der postmodernen Literatur, Kunst, im Film und in neuen Medien (z.B. Das dreitägige Graduiertenforum wendet sich an Promovierende unterschiedlicher Disziplinen (u.a. der Lite-ratur-, Kultur-, Geschichts-, Medien- und Kognitionswissenschaften sowie Philosophie, Theologie und Sozio-logie), deren Dissertationen und Forschungsinteressen erzähltheoretische Aspekte in den Blick nehmen. Bei-träge könnten sich mit folgenden Themenbereichen und Fragestellungen auseinandersetzen:

Narrative Verfahren zur Evokation von Welten in der Literatur und anderen Medien;
diskursive, gattungsspezifische und mediale Bedingungen für die Erzeugung erzählter Welten
Fragen nach der ontologischen Referenz fiktionaler Welten zur aktualen Welt und nach den Voraus-setzungen für die kategoriale Bestimmung von ›möglichen‹ vs. ›unmöglichen‹ Welten
›Unnatürliche‹/›unmögliche‹ Welten und ihre erzählerische Vermittlung (Paradoxa, Kausalitätsbrüche, metaleptische Erzählmodi etc.)
Historizität/Kulturspezifität von narrativen Weltentwürfen
Systematische Aspekte: Theorien und Methoden zur Analyse fiktionaler Welten; interdisziplinäre Zu-griffe und deren heuristischer Nutzen für die moderne Erzählforschung
Rezeptionsorientierte Ansätze: alternative Welten als mentale Modelle; Inferenzen von leserseitigem Weltwissen und erzählerisch vermittelten Informationen; Kohärenzstiftung und Naturalisierungsstra-tegien des Rezipienten

Diese und ähnliche Aspekte können anhand exemplarischer Analysen als auch durch Thesen allgemeiner Natur thematisiert werden.

Als Keynote Speaker konnte Dr. Jan Alber (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg) gewonnen werden. Vorge-sehen sind 30-minütige Vorträge, die jeweils von 15-minütigen Diskussionen begleitet werden. Die anfallen-den Reise- und Unterbringungskosten können bis zu einer Höhe von 160 Euro übernommen werden, wenn nachgewiesen werden kann, dass keine anderen Förderungsmöglichkeiten bestehen.

Steps to a Multi-Disciplinary Analysis of Scales

Paris, 14th-15th June 2012

The global impacts of local politics and power relations remains a largely unexplored continent.

The University of Chicago and the French Development Agency are pleased to announce a conference to be held in Paris on 14th and 15th June 2012, devoted to exploring these concerns and helping scholars to exchange concepts, research designs, methods and professional networks.

We are calling for paper proposals to be submitted before 31th January 2012

Papers should investigate how local interest games generate international consequences, through what channels and mechanisms - and whether current forms of international cooperation and global governance regimes are well or ill-adapted to these challenges. Possible research subjects may include, but are not limited to, the epistemology of scale analysis, climate change, environmental protection, global health, food security, financial crisis, international security and social violence. We welcome contributions from all fields of the social sciences, including economics, anthropology, political science, geography, philosophy or sociology.

Professor Arjun Appadurai will act as keynote speaker. He is currently Professor at New York University (NYU) and is recognized as a major theorist in globalization studies.

Travel, hotel and per diem expenses of contributors (on a 2 night basis) will be reimbursed.

Values in Literature and the Value of Literature

Debates on the value of literature have been recurrent in the long history of literary cultures. The centrality of literature as a cultural phenomenon has provoked discussions about its value as such as well as about the values it promotes and the uses it can be put to serve. Even the very attempts that were made to disengage aesthetic from ethical values ultimately served to accentuate the debate. But the issues debated and the answers given are subject to change and we may well ask how the matter should be seen today. What challenges do our globalised and multimedialised culture bring to the evaluation of literature? How do the new ways of reading literature within the academia affect our evaluations? If, with the advent of new theoretical approaches, a certain “hermeneutics of suspicion” has made its way into literary studies, how does it affect our ways of analysing the values (represented) in literature as well as our views of the value of literature? And is it also time to re-evaluate our ways of reading and “to risk alternate forms of aesthetic engagement”, as Rita Felski suggests?

The conference is inspired by recent and forthcoming contributions to the topic by our keynote speakers and partner institutions (Rita Felski’s Uses of Literature, the volume Literature and Values edited by Sibylle Baumbach, and Herbert Grabes and Ansgar Nünning in Giessen Contributions to the Study of Culture). We welcome papers addressing issues of the value of literature both in general terms and focusing on particular texts or historical debates as well as papers discussing particular works in terms of the representation of values.

Transformation of the German Labour Market

The past 10 years have been a transformative decade for the German labour market. Agenda 2010 – initiated by the Red-Green government under chancellor Schröder in 2003 – represented a neoliberal policy shift and marked the beginning of a new era for the German labour market. Eight years after its introduction, the agenda seems to have been a success in that the unemployment rate has decreased steadily, year-by-year. However, unemployment is not the only indicator of change in the labour market. Significantly, 1/3 of total employment can now be characterized as ‘atypical employment’ which means that millions of workers are at high risk of enduring precarious employment. 7.7 million workers are involved in temporary agency work, fixed-term contracts, part-time jobs, low-wage jobs, so-called €400 jobs and various other forms of atypical and precarious employment. These employment relationships are ‘precarious’ because almost all of these jobs involve more insecurity and discontinuity for the worker compared to ‘normal employment’. These jobs are thus more exploitative. Many sociologists conclude from their empirical studies that employment has become less secure and this has caused changes in society, including increased poverty and inequality. Atypical employment has grown at a rate of 46,2 % between 1998 in 2008. The so called ‘precariat’ was born in 2006 when the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation identified this new class of workers in a social survey. Once identified in this manner, discussion of such workers expanded beyond the academic realm and into public sphere. Since then, low-wage workers, temporary agency workers, and other workers in atypical forms of employment who make up the new ‘precariat’ have become the subject of social and political debate.

Agenda 2010 and the political decision to implement this specific model of labour market reforms deepened and advanced pre-existing transformations in the German workplace. So-called ‘subjectivation’, flexibilisation and de-limitation of work were already major and growing trends. Sociologists described these developments using the term Arbeitskraftunternehmer, which tries to describe the new challenges for workers. nIn the name of ‘time autonomy’, flexibilisation of working time was introduced. Indeed, the Arbeitskraftunternehmer seems to be more about increasing the terrain of competition in the labour market rather than using any new ‘autonomy’ to reorganize and restructure working time in order to fit with private life. Thus, flexibilisation and subjectivation are part of the enforcement of new types of occupational rationalization and reorganization which mark the end of the taylorist model and therefore blurring of the former boundaries of work in terms of content, working time and places (de-limitation).

Workers and the working class are confronting increased challenges as a consequence of these ongoing structural changes. As workers’ representatives, trade unions reacted by initiating campaigns calling for decent and good work while they themselves are faced with a number of related problems, including eroding membership and a decrease in organizing power. At the same time, NGOs, churches and social organizations see the risks of a more unequal society through rising child poverty and the number of the elderly living in poverty. This impact on young and old is becoming an increasingly important issue. Will Germany be forced to deal with the labour/social question as it did in the 19th century?
