"Intense and inspiring" - that is the catchphrase which captures the experience of the new PhDnet’s induction week for its international members. Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the PhDnet “Literary and Cultural Studies” at Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen constitutes an international network between JLU, the Finnish Graduate School for Literary Studies and the doctoral programmes in literary and cultural studies at the University of Bergamo, the Catholic University of Lisbon and the University of Stockholm.

It was in the induction week from 20th to 23rd October that the participating doctoral students and professors from the different home countries first met at the GCSC. Linda Karlsson from Sweden describes her impressions of these days:

Before we all met in Giessen, it was quite difficult to imagine what the induction week would be like, who the other PhD-Net-members would be and so on. I was quite surprised by the big multi-lingual ceremony on the first evening, but I think it made us all feel very welcome and lucky to be part of the network and the GCSC. Also in other respects, Prof. Nünning, his colleagues and the German PhD students in Giessen made us feel welcome. They were very patient when it came to answering our questions and showing us around in Giessen. Though the lectures and the project presentations were very inspiring and interesting, without the city tour and the visit in the “chocolaterie”, we probably wouldn’t have been able to focus as much on our working sessions as we did. The working sessions were intense and inspiring, I especially enjoyed the friendly climate during the presentations and the professional advice and tips we got subsequent to our presentations.
