Hinweise: "In the language sciences a corpus is a body of written text or transcribed speech which can serve as a basis for linguistic analysis and description. Over the last three decades the compilation and analysis of corpora stored in computerized databases has led to a new scholarly enterprise known as corpus linguistics." (Kennedy 1998: 1) In this lecture, the major aspects of the rapidly developing branch of corpus linguistics will be discussed, for example: what is a corpus and what does it represent, how to use corpus-linguistic software, what can a corpus tell us about authentic language use, why have corpora revolutionised language description, what are major theoretical and methodological differences between corpus linguistics and other linguistic schools of thought (e.g. generative grammar).
PhD students are most welcome.
