Hinweise:
This workshop intends to help participants to integrate the qualities of enthusiasm, commitment, passion, and authenticity into how they teach culture. Working in an English language environment, participants will practice teaching cultural theory in the classroom. As a preparation for the workshop, you will be required to read two chapters from Pierre Bourdieu’s
Distinction
(1984). (The text can be picked up to be copied in the GCSC.) Then consider how you might teach the concept of habitus to students unfamiliar with the term and apply it to specific cultural phenomena.
The instructors will introduce the subject and suggest ways of overcoming student passivity by integrating active and cooperative learning techniques into the learning situation. Participants will work in groups to prepare their own teaching techniques. A micro-teaching session will be featured, and a wrap-up session will be offered. Most importantly, the workshop should encourage future teachers to enjoy and learn from their own teaching practices, while at the same time critically questioning their teaching philosophies and approaches to their material and students.
