Hinweise: One of the most fundamental – and difficult – challenges in literary studies seminars is teaching students how to analyze literary texts on their own. Helping students develop their skills in close reading by means of guided practice plays an important role in achieving this teaching goal. In this course, we want to talk about different options for working with short text passages in class. In particular, we will focus on structural and semantic readings, dealing with topics like analysis of style and imagery.
Participants will be asked to prepare some ideas and questions that can be discussed in the workshop. There will also be opportunities for testing some of the ideas for study questions and group work sessions in class. This workshop is a follow-up event to the one we taught last semester ("Teilnehmerorientierte Textarbeit in literaturwissenschaftlichen Proseminaren"). Together, we will take a look at the question of how some of the methods we discussed last time can be applied in teaching close reading. However, the attendance of the first workshop is not a prerequisite for this course. Everyone interested is welcome to come.

Dr. Stella Butter is Assistant Professor of English and Cultural Studies at Mannheim University (Germany). She graduated from Mannheim University in English Studies, German Studies and History before working as Manager International Relations at the GGK/GCSC (Gießen University), where she completed her doctorate on literature as a medium of cultural self-reflexivity. She is a founding member of the "AG Hochschuldidaktik Literaturwissenschaft" (2004-2009) and as such has been involved in organizing workshops on Higher Education Teaching.

Dr. Dorothee Birke studied English and German Literature at Freiburg University and Trinity College, Dublin and received her PhD in English Literature from Giessen University. She was the manager of the GGK/GCSC for two years and is currently employed as a junior fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). Together with Monika Sproll and Stella Butter, she founded the "AG Hochschuldidaktik Literaturwissenschaft" in 2004 and since then has regularly been involved in designing and organizing workshops on Higher Education Teaching.
