Hinweise:
This research seminar will provide an introduction to data collection and qualitative as well as quantitative ways of presenting and analysing linguistic data. The methods discussed will be useful for empirical studies.
We will start out by reviewing the basic principles of planning a synchronic or diachronic linguistic project, move on to consider linguistic field methods (techniques for collecting spoken data) and other ways of obtaining data (etc. archival work, introspection, questionnaires) and finally look at various methods of interpreting them. At the beginning of the course, each participant will have to present to the class the idea for a linguistic project. We will discuss the specific problems connected with the research question and the necessary data collection and work on the project during the semester.
Note that we will make extensive use of the computer and linguistic/statistical software, so you should have basic computer literacy.
