Hinweise: IPP Workshop Series on Literary and Cultural Theory

For the academic year 2011/12, the International PhD Programme (IPP) “Literary and Cultural Studies” has organized a series of peer-workshops on Literary and Cultural Theory. The workshops will be taught by IPP members and the target audience is doctoral candidates as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students – at different levels of their studies. The topics are general introductions to different “schools” of literary and cultural theory.

In the current winter semester, the Workshop Series starts with Russian Formalism, and then moves on to Structuralism (including Narratology), Marxist Literary Theory, and Postcolonial Theory and Criticism. Participants will be required to read a short chapter – 15 to 20 pages – from an introductory course-book on literary and cultural theory. (All materials will be circulated via e-mail in advance.) The workshop is organized in two parts: first, the presenter starts with an introductory talk of about 20-30 minutes, covering the relevant chapter from the course book as well as supplementary texts such as articles by the practitioners of the relevant theory. This introductory talk will be followed by an open discussion and Q&A. In the second part, the presenter conducts a theory-into-practice discussion, i.e., applying the theory in question to a literary text or texts.

The programme for the first three workshops to be conducted this year is as follows:

  • Russian Formalism: Farzad Boobani | 30.11.2011
  • Structuralism: Natalya Bekhta | 12.12.2011
  • Marxism and Modernism: Daniel Hartley | 19.12.2011

Venue: GCSC Building (Alter Steinbacher Weg 38), Room 001
Time: 14-16

Registration is open for all BA, MA and PhD students, and possible via emailing ipp@uni-giessen.de. Please write “IPP Workshop Series” as the subject of your e-mail and specify in your e-mail which workshop/s you would like to attend. The deadline for registration is 22.11.2011.
