Hinweise: Many current theoretical approaches in the social sciences and the humanities display a propensity to making difference their basic category. This applies, for instance, for post-structuralist, postcolonial and feminist approaches, and can also be found in the idioms of interculturality, transculturality, or multiculturalism. However, the location of “difference” as theoretical category itself differs widely among these approaches. While some of them display a celebratory attitude towards difference, others are more cautious about the idiom of difference gaining a wider currency. What makes things even more complicated is a certain continuity or complicity between theories of difference and a societal identity politics. The seminar will interrelate the different approaches, and will be conducted in English.
