Hinweise: This advanced seminar/colloquium focuses on the relation between texts and contexts in literary and cultural studies. We will discuss theories, strategies and methods of contextualizing literary texts, and different approaches to context that range from ignoring them altogether ("context stinks"; varieties of formalism and new criticism) to regarding context as an essential reference point in interpretation (e.g. new historicism, gender and queer studies). But what different kinds of context are there, and how can we use contextual evidence in making sense of literary and cultural phenomena, ranging from the everyday to the highly specialised realm of 'autonomous' art and aesthetics?

Introductory reading: Borges, “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quijote.” Additional material in a course reader (will be available at Copy-Courier, Licher Str.)
