Cultdoc ist das Online-Portal für vier Programme der Graduiertenausbildung: das Gießener Graduiertenzentrum Kulturwissenschaften (GGK), das International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), das Internationale Promotionsprogramm „Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft“ sowie das PhD-Net. The Graduate Centre

The Graduate Centre at JLU accommodates four PhD programmes with distinct academic profiles and target groups. The GCSC is deeply integrated into these well-established structures to which it contributes an interdisciplinary and international perspective on the study of culture. Its renowned position as a centre for excel-lence in the study of culture builds on the experience gained and the infrastructure created by the Giessen Graduate School for the Humanities (GGK) founded in 2001 and the International PhD Programme “Literary and Cultural Studies” founded in 2002.

Since its foundation in 2006, the GCSC has collaborated closely with the GGK and IPP in maintaining and further enhancing effective and sustainable strategies for postgraduate education. These address PhD students’ needs to fund and organise the period of study efficiently while developing academic and social networks. They facilitate the development of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research profiles in the thriving field of the study of culture while pursuing the degree, and they encourage an international focus.

In order to achieve these aims, each programme has opened parts of its curriculum to members of the other programmes. Hence, collaboration is applied on both institutional and practical levels. At the same time, specific courses offered to members only preserve the particular focus and benefits of each of these programmes.

The dedication to participate in the ongoing evolution of postgraduate education in the social sciences and humanities is most pertinently reflected in a new PhD programme, launched in winter 2008: the European PhD-Network “Literary and Cultural Studies” adds another distinctively international profile to the GCSC’s network of academic affiliations at JLU.
