The GCSC started its activities in January 2007.
It builds on the infrastructures and innovative programme developed within the framework of the Giessen Graduate School for the Humanities (GGK). The GGK was established by Justus Liebig University in 2001 in order to overcome the shortcomings of doctoral training at German universities and establish a permanent infrastructure for doctoral studies following the example of international graduate schools. It has functioned as a flagship institution by implementing training strategies such as a clearly structured postgraduate curriculum, independent graduate research groups, a multi-track supervision and mentoring programme and a career service. The centre was launched after three interdisciplinary workshops in which over 150 postgraduates came together to discuss their needs and develop ideas. From the start, the GGK was thus developed in close cooperation with PhD students, and it continues to be our policy to involve postgraduates as much as possible in the further development of the centre. In 2002, the
Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and the Arts provided considerable start-up funds to establish the GGK.
