Even if you can't always imagine this happening during your studies: At some point, your dissertation will have been submitted, the defence will be over – and life after the dissertation will be about to begin.The GGK and GCSC Career Service assists you in developing perspectives for this life after the dissertation even while you are pursuing your degree. The completion of your doctoral degree will open up two career paths: You may either aspire to an academic career or decide to seize one of the various job opportunities outside of university. In the latter case, you may work in a field closely related to academia or in a different area of professional specification.
We consider ourself a gateway between the university and prospective employers offering advice on and orientation in the academic and non-academic job markets. Our mission is to enable postgraduates to (1) define their career goals and strategic plans, (2) discover career opportunities, (3) discuss key issues of professional life, and (4) prepare to take their first steps into the professional world.
We offer:
- Several workshops each semester, conceptualised in conjunction with the Federal Employment Office and designed specifically for the needs of postgraduate students, led by former graduate students and/or acknowledged experts in the field;
- An annual Career Congress titled “Promovieren mit Perspektive” which fosters exchange between current and former students, provides information on starting a career and insights into promising occupational areas for PhD students in cultural studies, social sciences and the humanities;
- Up-to-date links to information about career prospects, the application process and job market trends on our german website;
- Personal office hours for doctoral candidates; please contact Berenike Schröder to arrange an appointment.
