The term ‘ways of worldmaking’ is taken from N. Goodman's claim that the world we know has always been made from other worlds. There is no such thing as a given world – the only thing we can ever have access to is culturally shaped perceptions of the world. Recent years have seen an increasing interest across all disciplines in the question of exactly how these 'worlds' are made and how the relationship between worldmaking and orders of knowledge can be described. Useful concepts for exploring this question, which have come to the forefront of research are archives, media and the notion of narrative, . The 2007 European Summer School will focus on these three key concepts as a starting point for exploring ways of worldmaking.

Participating in the European Summer School 2007 means meeting excellent senior researchers and peers from top-ranking international postgraduate institution. The European Summer School welcomes a diverse group of junior researchers from a wide range of disciplines and offers a platform for a lively exchange on individual research projects, as well as the opportunity to participate in a range of master classes taught by outstanding senior scholars in their respective fields. As the ESSCS-summer schools are aimed at developing a thorough understanding of and exchange with contemporary endeavours in artistic creation and cultural innovation, the organisers of each summer school also invite an artist to engage in the transdisciplinary dialogue and to offer a workshop in which the theme of the summer school is explored in terms of artistic creation. The ESSCS programme also includes sightseeing activities in the respective host locations.
